For over a century, Chevra Mishnayes Synagogue has stood as a cornerstone of Jewish life, learning, and community in Winnipeg. What began as a humble gathering of dedicated immigrants committed to preserving daily prayer and Torah study has evolved into a warm, inclusive, and vibrant egalitarian congregation in the heart of the North End.

Chevra Mishnayes was originally founded as its own distinct congregation in 1908.

In 1971, members of Ohel Jacob (also spelled Oel Jacob), another historic North End Winnipeg congregation whose roots stretched back to the early decades of the 20th century, closed their doors and merged into Chevra Mishnayes.

The combined congregation brought together members, traditional artifacts, and religious texts to continue under the Chevra Mishnayes name at its Jefferson Avenue home.

Our early beginnings: The North End roots

The origins of Chevra Mishnayes date back to Winnipeg's historic Jewish North End during the major waves of Eastern European immigration in the early 20th century. Founded as a traditional chevra (fellowship or society) dedicated primarily to the daily study of Mishnah and prayer, the congregation provided families with a spiritual home, social connection, and mutual support.

As the North End community flourished, so did the shul. In its early years, services were held in dedicated spaces on Stella Avenue, serving as an anchor for neighborhood families who gathered daily and on Shabbat to maintain their heritage in a new land.

Building for the future: Jefferson Avenue

In 1965, reflecting the post-war demographic shifts of Winnipeg's Jewish population moving northward, Chevra Mishnayes established its current home at 700 Jefferson Avenue.

The landmark sanctuary with its classic architectural lines, stained glass, and intimate sanctuary-was designed to foster closeness and active participation. For decades, generations of families have celebrated life-cycle milestones within these walls, from B'nai Mitzvah and weddings to baby namings and holiday celebrations.

Embracing an Egalitarian Vision

While deeply respectful of its traditional roots, Chevra Mishnayes has thoughtfully evolved to meet the needs of modern Jewish families. Today, our synagogue operates with a fully egalitarian philosophy:

Equal Participation: Men and women participate equally in all aspects of ritual life, including receiving Aliyot, reading from the Torah, leading services, and holding leadership roles.
Accessible Prayer: Services balance traditional Hebrew liturgy with meaningful English readings, explanations, and joyful singing, ensuring that both lifetime congregants and newcomers feel comfortable and engaged.
Inclusive Belonging: We proudly welcome individuals and families of all backgrounds to join our chevra.

Chevra Mishnayes today: Warmth and vitality

Under the spiritual leadership of Cantor Al Benarroch, Chevra Mishnayes remains celebrated throughout Winnipeg for its hamish (warm), welcoming atmosphere:

Weekly Connections: Our Shabbat morning services are complemented by our weekly volunteer-run Kiddush lunches, where community bonds are strengthened over good food and conversation.
High Holy Days: Each year, our sanctuary fills with song and reflection, offering inspiring High Holy Day services open to members and guests alike.
Sustaining Community: Through our Chevra Chadashot newsletter, adult learning opportunities, and community events, we continue to put the Jewish value of Gmilut Hasadim (acts of loving-kindness) into action.
